Being a superhero may be fiction, but everybody dreams of being one. Amidst the drowning noises of the chaotic world, maybe we all need a bit of old-fashioned pep-talk to step-up and make a difference.
Bringing about a change is the high motto of the new generation, not only in architecture, but as a world-wide phenomenon. There is no more a stagnation in the urban youth, no lack of enterprise or enthusiasm, no fear for stability or of failure. Strangely, the lack is of sufficient platforms to sustain such enterprises, to spearhead such a huge wave of collective effort for urban-social change.
It was a moment of epiphany when architect and entrepreneur Abin Chaudhuri offered to initiate and lead a system to support the varied and scattered initiatives of various individuals around the city of Kolkata, and in the process, made leaders out of all of us. The Kolkata Architecture Foundation is not the story of an individual, it is the journey of architecture in the hands of many people, dedicated and aspiring to bring back meaning into plastic boxes, and to restore the power of architecture to manifest a social change.
